What’s the One Thing Dental Implants Can Do That Dentures Can’t? Preserve Your Jawbone!

Did you know that after you lose a tooth, the nearby bone along your jaw starts to deteriorate? No, really! Your tooth and dental root are responsible for transferring chewing pressure to your jawbone. This helps the bone circulate and receive the nutrients it needs in order to maintain itself. No tooth and no root means no stimulation, which means no nutrients.

So what does this have to do with dentures and dental implants? It turns out that while both of these restorations are extremely reliable, only one of them can prevent your jawbone from shrinking! Here’s how it works.

Dentures and Your Jawbone

Dentures rest right on top of your gums, and rely on suction to stay there. Because of this, even though there’s no equivalent to a dental root, dentures are able to transfer some chewing pressure to your jawbone. They’re able to slow the rate of deterioration, and ultimately, your jawbone will avoid significant shrinkage for longer than it would without dentures.

Dental Implants and Your Jawbone

Dental implants, though, do come with an equivalent to a dental root. For a dental implant restoration, titanium posts will be strategically placed along your jawbone. Over time, the bone and titanium will completely fuse together and become inseparable. This enables chewing pressure to be transferred directly to the bone. Basically, implants don’t just slow jawbone deterioration – they prevent it altogether!

Does that Make Dental Implants Better Than Dentures?

Not necessarily. The “best” dental restoration will be the one that works well for you. If you prefer the reliability and cost-effectiveness of dentures, then that’s the best solution for your smile. Likewise, if you prefer the unique health benefits dental implants have to offer, then that’s the treatment you should go with!

At the end of the day, it’s best to talk to your dentist when you need a tooth replacement solution. They’ll be able to help you define what you want and choose the plan that will best suit your needs!
